On November 19th, the Community-Centred Controlled Vocabularies (3CV) SSHRC Project hosted its first open workshop. The event brought together professionals, students, researchers, and community members to explore themes of inclusivity, access, and collaboration in knowledge organization. The day included insightful presentations, hands-on workshops, and discussions.
In the morning session, presentations by Thamilini Jothilingam (University of the Fraser Valley’s South Asian Canadian Digital Archive) and Bri Watson (Out on the Shelves Library and Homosaurus) highlighted innovative approaches to community-led descriptive work, metadata creation, and the challenges of navigating institutional and cultural boundaries. Attendees gained valuable insights into the experiences of project partners in fostering community engagement.

The afternoon session offered a hands-on workshop, providing participants with opportunities to collaborate and explore practical community engagement methods. This interactive environment encouraged peer connections and supported attendees in developing effective engagement strategies for their own initiatives.
Attendees discussed various topics, such as the power dynamics and relationships between institutions and communities, and were able to share their own experiences and expertise in these areas.
The event successfully fostered knowledge sharing and collaboration, advancing the goals of the 3CV Project. The event also provided an opportunity to receive input into relevant topics for future workshops in the series, so look out for further announcements!
